Sky News understands there is no appetite for leadership change within the Nationals party before the election, but Michael McCormack is in serious danger of being dumped at the first opportunity after.

Mr McCormack's approach to the government's 'big stick' energy bill, which the Nationals are demanding be put to a vote during budget week, is considered the next big test of his leadership. Former Leader Barnaby Joyce is considered one of the top contenders to replace him , telling media outlets on Friday he would contest the leadership if it was spilled.
