A heated meeting between federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt, the prime minister and senior National Farmers Federation officials last week may mark a low point in relations.

Already a subscriber?Farmers are assembling a war chest of more than $1 million to target marginal Labor seats in Western Australia as relations between the sector and the Albanese government plunge over the shutdown of live sheep exports.

In one account of the meeting, the politicians gave the farm lobbyists “both barrels” over the walkout. “They were cranky, really grumpy,” said one source.The politicians’ mood did not improve when they were told the NFF’s members council on Friday morning planned to pass a resolution declaring no confidence in the government’s management of the agriculture portfolio.the meeting was “robust”.

Historical gains for Labor in the west were crucial to Labor’s winning the last federal election, and the party cannot afford to lose many seats if it is to avoid minority government after the next election.
