A senior New Zealand minister advised Australia to adopt his country's softly-softly approach to China on Thursday, a rare public disagreement between the neighbours on how to deal with a more assertive Beijing.

"I can't speak for Australia and the way it runs its diplomatic relationships, but clearly if they were to follow us and show respect, I guess a little more diplomacy from time to time and be cautious with wording, then they too could hopefully be in a similar situation," he said. New Zealand's cautious approach to China has been reflected in its reluctance to sign joint statements from Five Eyes partners criticising China's crackdown on the Hong Kong democracy movement, including the recent arrests of activists in the city.

"We've always been able to raise issues of concern," Mr O'Connor told CNBC on Wednesday in the wake of a free trade upgrade that took more than four years to negotiate.

Go Fkoff NZ. You can lick the chinese ass but we will not follow yr smelly inclination

Funny how NZ thinks they are leaders and have it all right in society, when half of their population/citizens come to Australia to live and enjoy a better future.

SBS Ha!

The thing is that the Foreign Minister made the suggestion to this particular minister. She should be the one to blame for sticking her busybody snout into another country’s affairs

I thought the traditional NZ greeting was nose to nose not nose to arse

How much they been paid to say by CCPChina

Australia should show respect to EVERY country! Showing respect (not arrogance) is a signature of true dignity. Note: respect is not deference or obeisence.

In the end most leaders disappoint ...unfortunately jacindaardern will also . NZPOL

Thx for the guidance NZ but sometimes it is important to set firm boundaries for aggressors. ScottMorrisonMP timing may have been off but ABSOLUTELY there should be an independent inquiry into why a pandemic that continues to kill millions of people began in China covid19

Just another politician easily bought by CCP !

That’s because the NZ Government actually understands diplomacy, unlike our Aussie chest beating numbskulls.

NZ will be a great foot hold in the Pacific for China. A real strategic military battle base. Remember Troy. Beware of Chinese bearing gifts.

Sensible probably

MSMWatchdog2013 Ah but that would be logical and sensible. It will not have legs in Australian politics. auspol corruptPoliticians

Grab the KY - this might hurt!

Idiots

NZ living in the future, Australia living in the past

Kiwi with banana flavor!

CCP has succeeded in dividing the friendship, weak and sick NZ as always!

New Zealand has made their choice. They prefer Chinese trade to the rights of Uyghur Muslims who are locked up in concentration camps. Ardern will go down in history as the New Zealand Prime Minister who sold her soul to the Chinese government devil for Chinese blood money.

Don't cave into those bullies (China). I for one would pay more for any and all goods if and when Australia bans importation from those thugs. I don't like lowlives that threaten and bully the little guys. I know which finger I'd be raising to salute them. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

I wonder when China told New Zealand to say that to us?

SBS New Zealand hasn’t been used by ccp, one day they will regret, make business with evils is big risk

I would deploy diplomacy wherever possible. While people say we should stick to our gun, I suggest a confrontation with China isn't a wise option. The mirage called America is unreliable. We should lead our own foreign policy based on our interests & not just to appease the USA.

Seriously do we really care what New Zealand thinks?

SBS 'a more assertive Beijing' wow SBS going straight for the juggler, cant wait til your next in-depth and hard hitting stories like 'China tells HK it will get a smack on the bottom if it doesnt behave' & 'China sends Taiwan to bed with no dinner'

The western world played nice after Tinanmem square. Now here we are. They're using our 'playing nice' against us and have been for decades.

Having lived near and worked with Chinese business people in Asia, I learnt that they really dislike how we are down to earth and open. To be successful with them, one must be very discreet and superficially very polite. They however need to respect our culture too.

Now that China has their man in the White House, maybe we had better just bend over and take it.

SBS Laughed my head off when I heard that on the Radio this morning !! We should lay on the floor Spread Eagled while we are Stamped Upon !! Good One Jazza !!

For NZ it's easy as they live in the shadow of Australia's defence & security strategy. Thus they can more readily smooth up to the Chinese Communist party & not upset them.

PM jacindaardern, after all your good work for NewZealand, where did you dig up this emasculated apology of a paid Chinese tout. Australia can do without cheap Chinese stuff or passive real estate investments. Stay strong PM ScottMorrisonMP, MarisePayne, DanTehanWannon.

'relatively open toward the rise of China' is a chilling phrase

Australia don't care anything, only care about American opinions.

This is minister is a tool

This is 2nd rate behaviour and shows you where Jacinta Ardens principals and morals lie

We need to slowly become less dependent on Chinese trade. I'm not sure how, but I think if we don't we will become a hostage. Then when Pooh-Bear runs out of honey we can Tigger our way back to Rabbits house.

If you wanna go and get on your knees go right ahead just don’t expect others to follow ...
