New Zealand's government will declare a climate emergency, pledging 'immediate action'

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's government is to declare a climate emergency in a symbolic step to increase pressure for action to combat global warming.

"We've always considered climate change to be a huge threat to our region, and it is something we must take immediate action on," Ms Ardern said, according to state broadcaster TVNZ. The resounding win allows Ms Ardern's party to govern alone although she has joined forces with the Green Party for the next three-year term.

It’s great but according to its own official projections, current NZ Govt policy means we will increase net emissions by 16% 2017-2030 and only cut gross emissions by 7% over that period. Unless substantial policy change comes soon, the declaration is just empty words.
