New Zealand has recorded no new local cases of COVID-19, a day after a cleaner working at Auckland airport tested positive for the virus.
New Zealand health authorities have reported two new border cases in today's numbers, one of them being the infected cleaner. New Zealand now has a total of 83 active cases. The airport staff member is believed to have been infected while cleaning a plane that carried international passengers. However, the cleaner was fully vaccinated early in the country's vaccination program in February and March.LIVE UPDATES:"We know the Pfizer vaccine is highly effective, but at 95 per cent effectiveness a small number may not be protected," the ministry said in a statement."This shows us how important it is that as many New Zealanders as possible take up the offer to receive the vaccine when they are offered it and are protected.
However, both countries agreed not to immediately close the border if a case was detected, a point which New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern reiterated yesterday."We have full confidence in New Zealand's system," he said. "We've seen them deal with the inevitable outbreaks, and there will be other days when there are cases in Australia."And yet, we were able to deal with it."• Westfield St Luke's Food Court, Saturday April 17, 12.15pm to 2.30pm • Movenpick Dominion Rd, Saturday April 17, 5.15pm to 7.20pm
