New Singapore hotel is a foodie’s paradise

It used to be the shoppers among us who eyed Singapore as their ultimate quick Asian getaway, lured by the malls of Orchard Road and a favourable exchange rate. But the exchange rate has changed and Orchard Road is in the process of metamorphosis. Now it’s more likely foodies putting the Lion City on their agenda.

These start with the must-haves: Chara Brasserie, an all-day dining restaurant specialising in buffets, and a lobby waterhole, Klara Cafe and Bar.But then things get interesting with the Singapore debut of L’antica Pizzeria da Michele, a Michelin Guide-listed Neapolitan restaurant that was featured in the movie version ofand which attracts long queues for its signature Margherita and Marinara pizzas in Naples.

The hotel is also home to La Table d’Emma, offering Alsace and classic French cuisine, and soon, when these venues open later in the year, it will offer sushi at Ashino, craft beer at Upward Taproom, and coffee at TAG Espresso.These establishments are ensconced in what is touted as the biggest Mercure in the world– Mercure Icon Singapore City Centre. Developed by Singaporean rags-to-riches billionaires, the Choo family, it is run by Accor and has 989 rooms.

The hotel also provides respite from all that. Some rooms in the high rise have balconies, and the hotel’s Landscape Deck is where guests can enjoy the swimming pool or garden, and work out in the well-equipped gym.The latest travel news, tips and inspiration delivered to your inbox.
