With apologies to Abraham Lincoln ...
It was fine for the time. But the whole notion of being a South Seas British outpost became ever more outmoded, outdated and outrageous as the decades rolled by. We became ever more independent, proud of a history that is 65,000 years in the making, not a mere century or two. We became aware that we are so much more – spiritually, politically and numerically – than just transplanted Britons.
The Australian Republican Movement launches its new model for a new generation at Centennial Park on Wednesday. As you all know, in 1999, a referendum was held on a republican model to allow us to at last throw off our colonial garb. That model was rejected. Republicanism itself was not rejected – all the polls show, then and now, that the bulk of Australians are not monarchists. It was the model that was rejected.
This model ensures that Australia’s most distinguished, respected and trusted citizens will be in the starting line-up for head of state. At last, all Australian voters will be able to make a choice for their preferred candidate, so that we as a nation finally have a complete government
Peter_Fitz I would prefer the model where we can get rid of our totally crap government NOW rather than having to wait until they decide to call an election
Peter_Fitz Good let’s do it and get a president that will lead for the people
Peter_Fitz Didnt he just want the GG to visit the Tasmanian jumping castle tragedy? Divisive as per his Norm!
Peter_Fitz Couldn't give a shit right now tbh got bigger things to worry about
Peter_Fitz Why don't we just scrap the Governor General and call the PM of the day President. The AEC issues writs for the election on a fixed term basis. All legislation passed by both houses becomes law without the assent from the Queen.
MikeCarlton01 Peter_Fitz 11 nominated Australians and one could be elected head of state with as little as 10 - 15% of the vote?
Peter_Fitz Your own govt scuttled it... you do not live in a democracy. They know you will vote a beer keg as President, so they sabotaged the plan.
Peter_Fitz Many people will be reluctant to accept a head of State who has NO political views or affiliations, which in the current upbringing of Australians is a usual formulation of their thinking.People therefor would not believe anyone chosen here would have no such affiliations.
Peter_Fitz Unfortunately they have the wrong leader of the republican movement. He has the wrong political view. They need a Nixon to go to China. They don’t have a Nixon.
Peter_Fitz Nothing will “ bring us together” whilst Morrison and his similarly incompetent crew are in government!
Peter_Fitz So … In case this goes through, we’d be a banana republic rather than a banana monarchy, right?!
Peter_Fitz If the proposed head of state has one duty, to swear in the PM, why do they get A 5 year term at the taxpayer's expense? Just nominate someone, swear in PM, dismiss. Much cheeper.
Peter_Fitz It's the same model as last time best I can tell.
Peter_Fitz Peter_Fitz if you want to be ‘rid of our last colonial vestiges’ you’ll have to get rid of the States, which are the former Crown Colonies, and which have done so much to divide Australia and its people in the last two years. auspol AusPol2022 Republic
Peter_Fitz Keep it how it is… having a President represent and embody the dignity of the Australian people is the dumbest thing I’ve heard in years
Peter_Fitz 51st State of America here we come. We need to show to the world that we are spineless, stupid and cruel. President Peter Dutton NOW.
Peter_Fitz Shame about that Peter guy
Peter_Fitz Hmm No more royal commissions 💂- What’s the Alternative ?
Peter_Fitz That’s a good strategy. I believed then – and now – that the inappropriate models were put forward back in 1999. False dichotomy and sabotage.
Peter_Fitz Do it!
Peter_Fitz Each state should nominate suitable applicants based on set criteria of required experience and skills. An election occurs in each state to decide the states nominee and then a Commonwealth vote on all successful nominees. At least the public may feel involved in process.
Peter_Fitz Does each state have to nominate a separate person for the job,or can all states nominate the same person and limit the field. Eg all states nominate LNP hack and Commonwealth nominate LNP hack,Clive Palmer and Fraser Anning. Not much choice Now it is a choice of three candidates
Peter_Fitz The wording Howard used was loaded and designed for it to fail. Just asks shouid Australia be a republic. The mechanism for appointment is either no different to current one or by two thirds majority house of Reps, not senate as it's unrepresentative swill.
Peter_Fitz Peter Fitz is like a broken record 🤪
Peter_Fitz More power to the elites , no thanks 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 If we are every to become a republic, it will be the people who decide who our candidates are.
Peter_Fitz The first thing that needs to be asked via a plebiscite is one question. Should Australia become a Republic? Once that has been done then we can have the conversation about how the head of state is selected.
Peter_Fitz As long as the red rag pirate has his name attached to the republican movement it will continue to fail.
Peter_Fitz Whilst Fitzy and the miserable ghost are championing the cause there’s next to no chance - aside from a deplorable track record of backing winners, they are too divisive.
Peter_Fitz It'll fail. Too complicated. Too many opponents. No compelling reason to change.
