The federal government has outlined a multi-million dollar package to help prevent foot and mouth disease from arriving in Australia, amid concerns an outbreak could wipe out parts of the country’s agriculture sector.

Funding will also go to a new northern Australia coordinator to manage surveillance and preparedness strategies across the region. “We need to make sure we act quickly and err on the side of caution because the devastating impact that can have, particularly on our agricultural providers in rural and regional NSW, is significant,” he said on Friday.

Watt said as a result of that spread the government was now risk-profiling passengers returning from Indonesia. Cases of foot and mouth disease were detected in the country in May and later surfaced in Bali, which welcomes more than 100 flights from Australia every week.
