The new leader of the West Australian Liberal Party, Libby Mettam, readily concedes that she has taken on the toughest job in national politics: trying to inject new life into a moribund party.

Just as the last rites were about to be administered on a party that had enjoyed considerable success in the west since World War II but had hit hard times, she has stepped up to present a new image and, as far as dispirited supporters are concerned, new hope.

“I realised there was absolutely no point in taking on this role if I was not going to address the ‘elephant in the room’ and I did it with that in mind,” she said, describing the “elephant” as “some of the issues surrounding internal conflict in the party, and I felt there was an opportunity to really draw a line in the sand about these issues”.

She was initially rebuffed but then publicly insisted that Mr Goiran relinquish the role at a party meeting on Thursday. Another rejection would have been catastrophic for her.The third member of the troika was former Morrison government finance minister and strategist Mathias Cormann, who is now secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, based in Brussels.

The question of what to do next was answered when Mia Davies suddenly stepped down late last month as leader of both the National Party and the opposition .A party room meeting was called for last Monday to resolve the leadership issue. After initially saying he would fight for his job, Mr Honey read the signs and stood down.

And new Nationals leader and Moore MP Shane Love is officially the leader of the opposition with the extra resources the role provides.

When pressed, the former human services minister refused to take responsibility for his department's failure to ensure the debt recovery scheme was legal. Tudge , Morrison and Porter should be in jail for this, they will rot in hell Where are Shorten & Plibersek? Why are they not being ‘grilled’? I’d ask AlanTudge why Centrelink found it necessary to have a link to Lifeline in a post?
