World-first guidelines have been launched to enhance the lives of children who survive common cancers. 9News

"They can have difficulty with learning to read or write, with their literacy and it plays out in friendships and social media, landing their first job," said Dr Kimberley Docking, Director of the NeuroKids Research Laboratory at the University of Sydney.

Dr Docking's research over two decades has helped drive the development of new guidelines to ensure children are provided with follow-up care. The guidelines have been approved by the National Health and Medical Research Council. They include providing education for affected families and ensuring children receive timely intervention from diagnosis until the end of adolescence.

It also recommends long-term monitoring of speech and swallowing difficulties. The latter can lead to life-threatening chest infections. "We want to maximise their potential and we want to direct any future funding to these measures which assist them," Dr Luciano Dalla-Pozza said.

First world drama as eastern suburbs Sydneysiders complain about new bin systemYou know you’re in a privileged part of the world when you’re moaning about household composting bins – but to be fair, disgruntled Randwick residents in Sydney look as if they have a point about the council area’s new organic waste system. Doesn't food waste just go directly into the green garden waste bin at Randwick council like it does for the rest of us? Why a separate small bucket bin and bag? I just toss mine straight in the Green Waste wheelie bin. It's not rocket science.. Incredibly funny. Why is this so hard for people. I don’t live in Sydney’s east, but my bin liners fit, but disintegrate within a few days. Anyone else have that issue?
