The $24.1 million concrete crossing in Ashgrove is higher, wider, and more durable than its 90-year-old timber predecessor.

A $24.1 million bridge, opened in Brisbane’s west on Tuesday, has been built higher than its 90-year-old timber predecessor to provide flood-free traffic access through Ashgrove and The Gap.

Lord mayor Adrian Schrinner and local councillor Steve Toomey cross the new Gresham Street bridge on Tuesday. The bridge, which replaced the old Gresham Street timber crossing, was higher, wider, more durable and flood resilient, Schrinner said. “After experiencing some of the worst flooding our city has ever seen, the Gresham Street bridge project is also an important reminder of how critical it is to incorporate flood resilience into our designs,” Schrinner said.

Schrinner said the new bridge and associated drainage improvements were the type of road infrastructure the growing city needs.“As part of the project, we also undertook significant improvements to the drainage infrastructure on Gresham Street, Royal Parade and Waterworks Road,” he said.
