More than 1,000 patients with an incurable type of blood cancer are expected to benefit from a 'completely new' treatment to be subsidised by the Federal Government start of the new year.

More than 1,000 patients with an incurable type of blood cancer are expected to benefit from a "completely new" treatment that will be subsidised by the Federal Government in the new year.

An estimated 18,000 to 20,000 people are living with multiple myeloma and about 1,000 die with it each year, Myeloma Australia chief executive Steve Roach said. But he described Darzalex as a "new drug acting in a completely new way" that could allow patients to go for years before needing further treatment.

"In one way it gives us a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, that we may be able to cure this cancer one day," he said.Darzalex works by binding to the cancerous plasma cells and either destroying them directly or helping the immune system identify and kill them.

It’s obscene the money pharmaceutical companies charge and unjustified.

But what about the cure that was found?

but yes, a US style health system is *definitely* a better idea than what we have now. 🙄

Is this available in the uk yet

That's fantastic news

$480 is still substantial for most people. If the government is going to subsidise more than 99% of the cost, why not 100%?

On it already. But great news, nevertheless. (Thank you, Australia, for socialised medicine.) Now, how about CAR-T/BiTEs?

A patient cured is a customer lost.

Good news, but why limit it?

I want frequent random inspections of every food and beverage outlet and every node in the supply-chain. Australia's biosecurity has been breached. auspol ausdef

Great news this good job Aussie government haha that's twice what most of us make a year

Wow, this is amazing... If only this was in place a year ago, what a difference this would have made for my dad 🤩

Such good news! Really nice to hear this.

So many drugs like this are yet to be available to Australians, we need to accelerate the process, so much unnecessary suffering and death can be avoided by making expensive drugs accessible to all!

Thank you team ScoMo 👍.
