The idea of the National Broadband Network being made redundant by mobile technology is about to be put to the test as Australian telcos get their skates on to offer customers 5G-powered alternatives to the NBN

., announced to much fanfare this week, adds more fuel to the fire. Far from being a pipe dream, the likes of Telstra, TPG and Optus are confident they can use 5G technology to lure a significant chunk of homes away from the NBN.

Most of these homes have so far been reluctant to sign-up to the faster 100Mbps plans, held back either by high prices or the technical limitations of the NBN. "If you are getting a 12Mbps service over the NBN right now, I am pretty sure we can give you a better service through 5G...our cost structure will have to be competitive because that will let us make more margins compared to what we make reselling the NBN."

The issue of providing ultra-fast wireless internet to lots of homes is the biggest problem for the telcos. However, that could change from next year once the three mobile operators get their hands on mmWave spectrum. "You will see a big increase in contestability in the market over three years, where we are at the moment they can contest 20 to 30 per cent of the broadband market but with mmWave and related developments in three years time they may be able to contest up to 40 per cent.”

Fibre Optic Cable most sane choice . . . but Tesla Starlink will probably be superior outside major urban centres.

Your 5G connection is going to be only as good as your distance to the tower and everybody else’s 5G connection to said tower. I’d prefer a fibre optic connection any day where we’re limited by the speed of light.

I lost my cable after the Sydney storms. I went wireless modem. 4G. Its fine. It works. Combined with solar +inverter +battery..I can still do computer even during a total blackout. Plus I can travel.

Unless the Telco's are prepared to put a mmWave basestation in every street of every town a FTTH NBN will always be the only way to deliver real bandwidth to Aussie homes.

5G is a shared medium; it may have far higher maximum speeds, but you can only reach those speeds when no-one else is using it. But people pushing 5G as an alternative conveniently never mention this.

Well, that would be very awkward for the narrative...

NBN v 5G: The broadband battle is about to heat upTelstra this week delivered peak download speeds of 4.2 gigabits per second (Gbps), four times faster than the fastest NBN plan available to homes, using 5G technology. LOL. The fibre upgrade announced to much fanfare? No. It was announced to much facepalming. Costello cannot try and sell this like it shouldn't have been done 10 years ago. You mean NBN is already outdated? Well colour me surprised

You will be remembered for many things, but your extraordinary effort in Madras, while battling a terrible combination of dysentery and vomiting, was the innings of your career. Of course it wouldn't happen today. No runners allowed.
