How astronaut screening programs inspired a group of Australian scientists to study the individual personalities of 50 native rats.

Fifty native rats are being put through their paces in a rigorous testing regime adapted from NASA astronaut screening that scientists hope will show how animals cope with environmental stresses like climate change.Scientists at James Cook University are undertaking the most comprehensive study of resilience in native rats to date

"A lot of animal behaviour work is done at a species level, not an individual level, and many studies only focus on a single aspect of an individual such as its behaviour or cognition," said Tasmin Rymer from James Cook University. While the rats won't actually get to complete a space mission, Dr Rymer said the project drew inspiration from NASA's model for screening astronauts.

Actually sex is the key to adaptation, and I'm not surprised that nerds wouldn't know that.

Knackery in 7.30 story was taken to court for animal cruelty last monthBurns Pet Food at Riverstone pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty relating to dozens of cattle and an injured sheep only a month before the ABC's 7.30 report into the slaughter of horses. We often talk abt how our licestocks are treated so badly overseas. Yet in our own backyard the situation is no different. This was very disturbing. No social participation for Melbourne Cup this year. No offence ABC but this headline is ANOTHER beatup. That business was/is going bust, and didn't have any horses there... So this is a scream for attention, rather than factual reporting, which is sad.
