abc.net.au/news/myanmar-junta-extends-emergency-coup-anniversary-protest/101920414Myanmar's junta has extended the country's state of emergency by another six months as "silent" protesters marked the anniversary of a 2021 military coup.

"Although, according to the section 425 of the constitution, [a state of emergency] can only be granted two times, the current situation is under unusual circumstances and it is suitable to extend it one more time of six months," Acting President Myint Swe said at the meeting broadcast by MRTV. The South-East Asian country's top generals led a coup in February 2021 after five years of tense power-sharing under a quasi-civilian political system created by the military.

On Wednesday, protesters and exiled civilian leaders vowed to end what they called the army's "illegal power grab". Extending the state of emergency appears to set back plans for an election that had been expected in August. In major cities across Myanmar, streets emptied as people stayed home in protest, while hundreds of democracy supporters attended rallies in Thailand and the Philippines.derailed a decade of reform, international engagement and economic growth, while leaving a trail of up-ended lives.

Australia imposes sanctions on military leaders in Iran and MyanmarThe Australian government says those hit with sanctions 'have engaged in, been responsible for, or been complicit in, serious violations or serious abuses of human rights in Iran'. This is a really good move. It shows our disapproval of these governments murdering their own citizens without further hurting those being oppressed. Well done SenatorWong! No such condemnation of military leaders responsible for ethnic cleansing of us from own lands since the West pretended to be friendly with natives, not only in Australia, but all over world too! Every such utterance from the Australian government just reinforces how obvious it is we have no independent foreign policy, no real independence in fact. Just another outpost of American hegemonic empire.
