I had the year's travel scheduled. The plan was to see each other no less than every 28 days — we even had a spreadsheet! And then coronavirus split us indefinitely, writes Susan Abel.

This morning I opened my son's bedroom door and casually asked him "What's with the sad face"?We're a transnational family and everyone but me is a dual PNG-Australian citizen.

Raising three kids between two countries, cultures, school systems and employment has never been easy. But with quarantine restrictions and uncertainty over border closures it felt as though it could have been a one-way ticket and any prospects to continue work in PNG would be lost. We've chosen to sit tight where we all were at the beginning of the crisis — but the emotional cost is high.

I call Owen so I can see him while I'm making my morning coffee and sometimes get to say "Hi" to his folks, or to our dog Max in PNG . Sitting on my couch in NSW watching Netflix together makes me happy, even though she's technically in her room in Brisbane watching her own TV, and we are just Whatsapp video chatting with our phones fixed to tripods beside us.The boys and I sit down for dinner with Owen who is at the end of the table on the laptop screen. This routine allows us to continue to share our daily lives, plan future holidays, and watch our PNG-based cat meowing futilely for a bite of Owen's mackerel.
