In the semi-arid riverside town of Irymple in Victoria, 70-year-old Pat and 68-year-old Gina Timpano are keeping the traditional spirit of the Mediterranean coastline alive.

Whether it's vibrant passata, rich olive oil, or pickled artichokes, food has the power to transport you back to a moment or memory.Along the Murray River in north-west Victoria some Calabrian and Sicilian immigrant families still live "the old Italian way".

Gina's mother preserved everything that was in season — drying figs, pickling vegetables, and salting meats."We had to make our own oil and didn't worry about a mortgage because we had no money." "I think it's so easy now to go buy the stuff. The money's there. We didn't have any money. We had to survive on whatever we grew," Pat said.In Mildura, keeping their old school traditions alive became their mission.
