Schools across Sydney have been selected for precautionary testing for contaminated mulch with one school closing to students as three new sites are identified to contain asbestos.

One Sydney school has closed after the newly formed Asbestos Taskforce identified seven schools for priority mulch testing, while a Sydney supermarket and a hospital have also tested positive for asbestos.

“Those that remain open are advised to keep students and staff away from garden beds in and around the school sites, and to expect to see EPA officers on the ground throughout the day.” The sites contained bonded asbestos, a relatively low-risk type of asbestos that does not easily become a powder. The company has provided negative testing results from their facility undertaken after the first detection at the Rozelle Parklands, and is challenging an order by the EPA preventing them from selling mulch in the Land and Environment Court.
