A desperate attempt to save Tasmanian devils from a highly contagious disease is paying off — but it's come at the cost of birds on a small island off Tasmania's coast.

For millennia, Maria Island off Tasmania's east coast was a predator-free haven for ground-nesting and flightless birds such as the Tasmanian native hen, shear waters, Cape Barren geese and the little penguin.

"A survey was conducted by Parks and Wildlife staff about 18 months ago … and they found that all of the penguin colonies on Maria Island were empty.Little penguins are the smallest of all the penguin species. "We suggested that the outcome of this particular introduction on Maria would follow what has been seen without fail everywhere else in the world, and sadly we were right."A spokesperson for DPIPWE said Maria Island remained an important part of the Save the Devil Program to restore the wild devil population in Tasmania.

He called on the DPIPWE to act quickly to give the little penguins a chance to return to the island, which had been a rare, safe breeding spot away from feral dogs and cats.

davidghamilton1 Its incredibly short sighted that they thought anything different would happen.

davidghamilton1 This would have to go down as one of the most moronic decisions ever made.

Gee as if they couldn’t see that coming. Maybe educate your 24yr old “environmentalist” uni grads better before sending them off to be “wildlife warriors”.

Tasmanian Aboriginal group fears cable car will forever damage cultural value of kunanyi-Mt WellingtonAboriginal heritage officers say the cultural value of Hobart's kunanyi-Mount Wellington would be damaged forever if a proposed cable car goes ahead. The absence of any physical evidence cannot be used to deny the cultural values of kunanyi to Aboriginal people 😂 SBS I thought we wiped out the tassie aborigines? Oh please … Tasmania aborigines today would be unrecognisable to those from 300 years ago. Their language has been lost (& and a new simulacrum invented). I wouldn’t be reading too much into this, especially given the absence of actual archeological evidence.
