It's a number that seemed unthinkable just two months ago, yet the United States is about to burst through it. One hundred thousand people dead from the coronavirus.
But this was a rare concession. Instead, he has squarely positioned himself as cheerleader-in-chief. At every step he has accentuated the positive rather than dwell on grim statistics that could undermine his re-election chances. Unlike other tragedies such as the September 11 attacks, the tens of thousands of coronavirus deaths have occurred largely out of sight. And the culprit is a deadly pathogen rather than a malevolent human actor.
African Americans have been affected more than whites. City dwellers more than those in rural areas. Democrats more than Republicans. The poor more than the wealthy, and the old more than the young.
