Mother and Son: ABC to reboot beloved sitcom with comedians Denise Scott and Matt Okine

Almost three decades after the original show ended its successful 10-year run on the ABC, Okine has collaborated with the original writer, Geoffrey Atherden, to create a new program which explores ageing and changing family dynamics, with the added twist of the migrant experience brought by Okine,“Matt himself grew up with a white mother,” the ABC’s acting director, entertainment and specialist, Jennifer Collins, said.

The role of Maggie won the late actress Ruth Cracknell a swag of Logie awards including the Gold Logie in 1994; and Garry McDonald as Arthur won most outstanding actor in the same year. While Okine’s version as yet has only eight 30-minute episodes, the original was so popular it ran for six seasons, between 1984 and 1994.

Why not call it Another mother and son? Silly to reboot an old series with new actors in the same roles when you could simply have made a new series.

I really like both Denise and Matt, but leave it alone. Ruth Cracknell was a master of her craft; her performance was and still is sublime - make something new
