Scott Morrison wants the power to declare a national state of emergency and call out the Defence force to deal with natural disasters

Prime Minister as he says the cycle of dangerous fires "must be broken".

The speech at the National Press Club on Wednesday will focus on practical measures to deal with the bushfire crisis, rather than setting out a policy agenda for 2020."I have been very conscious of testing the limits of constitutionally defined roles and responsibilities this bushfire season," Mr Morrison will say.

The change would likely be achieved through negotiation with the states to pass new legislation interacting with state powers – rather than a referendum to change the constitution.

Scummo is no leader and should never be given that responsibility...I really shudder to think what reasons he would come up with....!!

Does that include environmental demonstrators?

The NSWRFS are equipped with the knowledge required to combat these disasters. So why would we put all the power and decision making into the hands of the defence force? They should be utilised as a backup with the guidance of our RFS team and Premiers leading the process.

He doesn’t need it.

Ah... NO.

Lock up the arsonists, green anti backburning protesters and that climate change helicopter pilot that started the fire in Namadgi.

And I would think the people want another election right now ?

No he wants no when he or who ever is pm able to call in defence force in nature disaster

No

Based on his recent performance, I wouldn’t want this ningcompoop in charge of emptying the dunny cans let alone coordinating a national disaster response

I like that bit where ScottFromMarketing says he wants to KPI bushfire management. Just... wow. auspol auspol2020 AustraliaBurning

Ok but you need to address climate change seriously Mr Prime Minister!

Well he should have it! Every man and his dog were quick to blame him for the States responsibilities... Got blamed for something that was not his fault. auspol

All about Scomo , power crazy, policy initiatives barren . We all know it’s all about him being “the man” trouble is he’d dither and cock it up

You'd think a phone around, including the leader of the opposition would get agreement pretty quickly on legitimate emergencies. No need to give the pm unilateral powers

No ! The LNP abuse the powers they already have !

Can the people declare a State of Emergency over his handling the crisis?

He’s got quite enough power already, thank you. We’ve all seen how well he handles it and how firmly he resists its corruptive powers. *Sarcasm*

No no! It’s wealth distribution we want to fight the fires!

What’s in it for him? Bit sus if you ask me.

Can this be done from Hawaii?

Wouldn't even trust a cheeseburger from maccas If it was made by ScottMorrisonMP . When I 1st saw he likes cricket I assumed an Aussie caring for aussies. Now he looks like an inside terrorist (al-queda Scott from Isis marketing)

I he has got enough.. an even abuses that.. he doesn’t need any more power

Bit late to start caring mate.

He’s a failure

No. He cannot be trusted, along with Dutton.

ScoMo is not a man of action.

In Italy changing the language in the law from “disaster” to “big event” allowed Berlusconi to take advantage of situations and give lucrative contracts to big business, with little concern for displaced residents & only short term housing options. Beware

There is real danger in allowing an expansion of federal power, particularly in relation to disasters. Berlusconi and Italy reveal a precedent. Beware.

Excellent, Not that declaring anything a state or national emergency here actually does anything, it at least shows he's present & accounted for & ready for action.

Distraction much. You were at fault, get that into your thick skull. You want more power to turn the water cannons on protesters maybe? ScottyFromMarketting

ScottyfromMarketing out of his depth

Really?! He couldn’t organise a root in a brothel...

Defence already helped in emergency situations...until the slug took office, anyway

Great idea ! 👍

I don’t mind that !! After all the National Government should be responsible for National Emergencies.

How about he just learn to hold a hose.

He always did have the power. It is called a phone.

Photo op and marketing....

Careful, a national emergency might be protests!

This is a response to calls from the public. A knee jerk reaction to the recent bushfire horrors, quite understandable I guess. However, I suggest be careful about what you wish for, it can have unforeseen consequences in the hands of some politicians.

Labor would abuse their power if given a chance imho

Could they have helped improve his Hawaiian holiday...?

Moar power!

ScottyfromMarketing doesn’t need more power, he needs leadership; a skill he doesn’t have and is highly unlikely to develop. Our leaders have managed crisis’ in the past, without inching towards draconian powers. I trust our NSW RFSCommissioner over Scotty, any day. auspol

Makes sense. When disaster is national coordinating resources can be a bureaucratic logistic nightmare. He copped all the blame for not 'handling it correctly' when he didn't have control. Now he wants control for a national event we want to stop him? Can't blame PM next time.

Isn't it a state issue?

That's a NO from me, he is trying to cover up his own incompetence. Not returning from holidays, saying it is a state by state issue, washing his hands of all responsibility. He is a self-centred, lying fraud, no clue how to handle a crisis, not PM material, he is a failure.

No

Clearly ScoMo is seeking the power to take action after being ridiculed for failing to act. Obviously the Left will feel warm and fuzzy about the hijacking and centralisation of State responsibilities - it will embolden further attacks on ScoMo for things out of his control.

But three weeks ago he was adamant the bush fires were a State emergency issue. It's almost as if he has absolutely NO CLUE and is just making it up as he goes along.

We may have a disaster upcoming with coronavirus. But i dont think giving more power to Morrison would help. I dread where that might lead, if he was given extra power, and so far his emergency funding has only gone to LNP doners

Don’t forget while people were asking where our Defence Force were they were already helping in the dark skies and others were ready &waiting to get his call last month. All this while other countries were here already for months. Then he used their face in that gross Ad!

And he should have the power! Override every dckhead who ruined this country and made it burn!

There’s already a national emergency it’s called the liberal parties stance on climate change and refugees

If it wasn't already there, it didn't seem to stop previous PM's acting

no no

The problem was the public wanted him back from holidays and take charge otherwise it would have been left to the states Ithink Labor will support as they were the number one critic

Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah

No Prime Minister, our Commonwealth is comprised of a Federation of States & Terrorities. What you need to do is to comply with the Constitution to build & provide national resources that assist Federated member states. E.g. resource and enable the RAAF with MAFFS systems

ScottyFromMarketing: 'I had to wait to be called in to help! I wanted to take strong, decisive action, but the rules wouldn't let me! We have to change the rules so I can be the winner - otherwise, I'm gonna tell on you!'

Just a smoke screen to deflect from his inadequate performance.

Never trust a marketing man with more power, he’ll just abuse it.

He just called out the ADF 3 weeks ago. Now his pretending he wasnt able to do this.

He might want to learn some science in order to actually understand and recognize one first.

His idea of a national state of emergency would be a lack of coal production, as brushfires continue to blaze...

It didn’t take Malcolm Fraser anytime ar all after the “Hilton Bombing”.

ScottMorrisonMP wants to be a dictator he doesn't give a damn about anyone but himself. He is evil

That is a no from me. Did we all not learn from the mistakes the republic made in the clone wars or revenge of the sith. Giving this man that sort of power. What would he describe as a national disaster? A bunch of protesters questioning him? I wouldn’t put it past him.

Yeah yeah - now show us the other side of the coin clown.

Why? We have had successive PMs who have dealt with natural disasters without having to resort to this sort of virtue signalling. He’s just looking for another talking point t to stop the media holding him accountable for his terrible leadership skills.

Yikes, sounds a bit totalitarian and fascist to me

Because a phone call to the state premiers is sooo hard?
