Prime Minister Scott Morrison has personally thanked the Trump Administration for helping to secure the release of an Australian man in a prisoner swap with the Taliban.

Australian academic Timothy Weeks was named as one of two men released by the Taliban as part of a prisoner swap. The 50-year-old was held captive for three years after being arrested at gunpoint along with an American colleague in 2016.

The two men were released into the care of US Special Forces after the Afghan president announced last week that three insurgents would be freed as part of the arrangement. Mr Morrison said hewas happy about the news and had since been in contact with the US Secretary of State. Image: News Corp Australia
