Scott Morrison has thanked his supporters and the local community in his electorate of Cook as the Prime Minister prepares to usher in the Coalition's third term in office. A historic victory saw the Coalition returned to government, despite pre-election polling suggesting it would be an unwinnable fight against Labor.

Several seats still remain in contest while counting continues, including the former Liberal stronghold of Wentworth which has incumbent independent MP Kerryn Phelps neck-and-neck with Liberal candidate Dave Sharma. Despite clinching a victory, the Liberal Party has lost one of its New South Wales blue-ribbon seats, with independent Zali Steggall taking Warringah from former prime minister Tony Abbott, who had held the seat for 25 years.
