The most confounding quirk of the Morrison government is not that it’s wrong, but that it’s often right - but only after refusing to be for so long, and for no apparent reason. |OPINION by Waleed Aly auspol

“I think it is just an obvious fact,” declared the Prime Minister this week as he touredWhat a frankly astonishing admission that is. How unvarnished. It isn’t relative or euphemistic. It isn’t “Australia is being affected by climate change”, or “we’re facing more natural disasters”. It’s absolute. “Getting hard to live in” has a ring of resignation about it. It’s like given the choice, humans would really rather live somewhere else.

That, I think, captures the most confounding quirk of the Morrison government. It’s not, as its most trenchant critics charge, that it is almost always wrong. It’s that it is often right, but only after refusing to be for so long, and for no apparent reason. And nothing quite exposes that trait like the two years of rolling emergency we’re going through.

Secondly, it relented on building new quarantine facilities. Now, one is finally built in Victoria, just as we’ve stopped using quarantine altogether. In both cases, the Morrison government raged in pursuit of lost causes, and contrived to get no political credit for what it finally did. I still can’t quite figure out why.Or take the vaccine rollout. The Morrison government forecast that every Australian would have had the chance to get two COVID vaccine jabs by October.

Morrison’s explanation is that he can only do this in consultation with the relevant state premiers, who would then write to him requesting the declaration, and that they hadn’t done so. Perhaps the premiers really didn’t think it would help. Or perhaps they’ve simply not been as active as they could have been. But it also seems likely the federal government could have initiated that consultation in earnest sooner than it did, and made that plain to whole country.

Robodebt. Climate Change. Rorting. Refugees. Enough.

Get rid of state governments who only try to divide the country

He’s normally pretty perceptive but Waleedally doesn’t get ScottyFromMarketing here. The PM only leaps into action when real world problems become political problems for him. scumo sits back let’s people suffer until it starts costing the LNP votes. auspol LNPDisgrace

'Quirk' makes it sound so harmless. Like we're over here having a bit of a chuckle about it. Bloody hell.

If Waleed is 'confounded' and 'just can't quite figure out why' Morrison constantly takes toxic, antisocial positions on issues for 'no apparent reason', then perhaps The Age should consider whether it's worth paying him to write analysis. It's not that hard to connect the dots.

Mental gymnastics in full force!!!

Wrong on so many levels

Waleed 'still can't quite figure out why' Morrison's first instinct is to act like an incompetent dickhead. Jeez, Waleed's going to feel silly when he works that one out.

Luckily no one cares about the opinions of terrorists.

The only reason the Morrison government eventually gets anything right is because they are pressured into it by almost universally accepted common sense by then. auspol

How is it right? Morrison isn’t acknowledging man made climate change here; he’s telling us to toughen up and live with disasters while he merrily continues to destroy the planet. He’ll be fine with his huge pension and perks until he dies.

Delusional article 🙄

A delayed decision is not right when the delay creates a worse problem. Stop sucking up to Scummo.

I mean, another way to view this is Morrison only does things when shamed into doing it

Quite a forgiving take. Would expect nothing less.

Interesting take, but actions don’t back it up. Morrison will say the right thing eventually- when it’s so politically uncomfortable to hold his existing position. Will say the right thing to get it out of the news cycle, then ignore it. Bushfire relief, iCAC etc.

I find the premise here objectionable. To narrow it down to the binaries of right & wrong and then allow an escape hatch that by finally accepting public pressure makes a decision right is just, juvenile logic. Waleed making sure he keeps his nose in the right place!

We have had enough of the conservative media and their bias towards the Liberals AlboForPM

I can’t remember when the Morrison-Joyce government was actually right. Getting dragged kicking and screaming to do the right thing isn’t being “right”.

Hitler’s confounding quirk that he might have killed millions of Jews….but he was often nice to them as well….

Can't remember the last time they were right. Ridiculous nonsense.

What is the point of this?

The most fatal flaw is his ranting thoughtlessness followed by his inaction action spiced up with lies, schemes sneaks and squirms. Remember his remarks Nov 2021.

It's not right though. It's not climate catastrophe, it El Nina effect. Climate catastrophe nut jobs have long told us we would never get enough rain to fill our dams again, let alone floods. They keep changing their narrative everytime something occurs that has always occurred

There it is again..resting smirk face ..grrrr
