Sky News contributor Catherine McGregor says Australia’s rule of law features the presumption of innocence, and the Prime Minister’s reference to the Brereton report containing “brutal truths” was “overreach”.

Her comment comes after Judge Paul Brereton’s report detailed evidence of 23 incidents allegedly committed by Australian soldiers – including the alleged killing of 39 Afghan civilians. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the report exposed “brutal truths”. “All these matters remain mute; in that we’re waiting to see due process,” Ms McGregor said.

Ms McGregor said she was prepared to give Prime Minister Scott Morrison the benefit of the doubt by presuming he conducted the inquiry into allegations of war crimes in Afghanistan to “avoid the humiliation of our people being dragged off to an international criminal tribunal”. “But, our rule of law does feature a presumption of innocence and his choice of language on that day was poor and there was overreach,” she said.

Innocent until proven guilty, sounds good but has problems. During the war in Ireland the UK government introduced detention without trial, Ghislaine Maxwell is 'innocent'. Can't get ISIS to trial, not enough evidence to 'prove' it.

Sky News' continued efforts to undermine and diminish the severity of the Brereton Report's findings that war crimes took place is disgusting. auspol

great Australia

Australians should be proud of the investigation into murder committed in it's name. Well done Australia. You could never imagine the English doing something similar. No, the English celebrate their history of invasion, theft, murder and enslavement of poorer countries. Disgraceful

Nah....Scott Morrison a former marketing person he knows how to spin it, just like News Corp/SKY attempt to do it. This story is starting to lose any impact its already been in over kill for some time. Time to get a life and move on.
