But about the week to come, he was prophetic – almost. It has not felt as though the country itself is coming apart. Australians, I suspect, remain in this together, as much as we can when our experiences vary so widely. Our leaders, on the other hand, have descended into what looks, to most of us, like childish squabbling.
I suspect the Prime Minister has misjudged this. During the bushfires we all spoke of skies turning red, but looking at pictures from California this week I remembered: it is the whole world that changes colour. Your entire experience becomes contained within this single phenomenon. There is a kind of constant sadness, there is no relief, and nobody not there really understands.
There is a risk here that Morrison doesn’t appear to have grasped. Much of the political discussion right now revolves around comparisons: is this leader worse than this one, who is more secretive, who is more arrogant? Andrews has lately lost ground in these comparisons, for good reason. But it doesn’t follow that Morrison benefits.
This is part of the reason Anthony Albanese has now begun to talk about "the Morrison recession". He’s not so crazy-brave as to think he can deny reality: in the same speech, he described "the Morrison recession sparked by the coronavirus pandemic". In the short-term, it’s a weight of sorts against the government’s implication that this is the Andrews recession. It is an attempt to remind voters of whose job it is to fix things. Mostly, it’s a long-term bet.
The main element the government has so far hinted at is bringing forward a tax-cut package. In a sense, this is minor: the cuts have already been legislated. Certainly it lacks imagination. But bringing them forward will cement them. Until now, opponents have had hope they might somehow never happen – after all, there’s another election before they kick in. That’s part of the reason they’ve never received as much attention as they deserve.
mrseankelly Leader ? He's not a leader of anything, desk jockeys in advertising departments don't lead they just make up slogans that are supposed to be clever.
mrseankelly 'the Morrison recession sparked by the coronavirus pandemic' is pretty accurate if you replace 'sparked' with 'amplified'. It's definitely Morrison's as he was Treasurer during much of the time it took to create it.
mrseankelly Other than welfare payments and tax cuts he has no other newsworthy solution so far. Tax cuts those who already earn, in recession times is more likely to be saved than spent. His efforts should be on the recovery. Right now his efforts are in his political attacks against LBR.
mrseankelly
mrseankelly He has made every effort to achieve national unity and cohesion and has been consistently blocked in this effort by state premiers, with the notable and noble exception of NSW
mrseankelly Bollocks. Any reasonable human-being can see the only people dividing Australian citizens are the Premiers and their arbitrary and draconian border policies and playing politics with people’s lives and livelihoods.
mrseankelly Says some lefty hack
mrseankelly Comment: Not actually journalism. Fairfax is trash.
mrseankelly Back room operator. The bloke lurking in the background with a dagger in his hand. The only way he has got ahead in life. Wouldn’t know what leadership was if it punched him in the face. Believe me it will and like all glass jawed bullies he will stay down.
mrseankelly
mrseankelly This has all got to do with taking the attention off the failed Aged Care System. Sorry Scotty but we still want it fixed.
mrseankelly Morrison Continues to Divide But Not Conquer. He's Conqued Out. auspolsodirty
mrseankelly Morrison already missed his opportunity to be prime ministerial but reverted to type: see handling of bushfires.
