“The information that was tabled to me just a couple of days after I was elected to mayor was that it was a farm that has been operating in the 18th and late 19th century by the McCrae family,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
The council was named after land which had purchased by a member of the McCrae family who had given it the name of his family’s plantation in Jamaica. “And he’d made his money and the family had generated money from that farm by producing rum and sugar and not just having slaves work the farm but they were also trading – so they were slave traders as far as I understand.”
Mr Riley also pointed out the land had been sold off by the British without the consent of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people.
