Prosecutors are still waiting on key pieces of evidence in the Kumanjayi Walker murder trial, suggesting COVID-19 may be adding to delays.

A court has granted an adjournment in the murder trial of a Northern Territory police officer over the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker, with the prosecution suggesting COVID-19 impacts may be adding to delays in finalising evidence.Prosecutors are still waiting on evidence including police statements and medical reports

Prosecutor Colette Dixon told the court the extra time was needed because her office was still waiting on further medical and forensic evidence to add to what she called an"extremely large" brief. Asked why the evidence was taking so long to gather, Ms Dixon told Judge John Birch the time estimate was provided by investigating police.

"I don't know if that particularly has relevance to this matter but I just know generally that we've been told by the hospital, for example, for serious harm-type statements, those types of things, they will be done as they can get done."Constable Rolfe's lead defence lawyer David Edwardson QC, appearing via video link, told the court his team would need time to examine all the material.
