She fell to the ground and as she looked up she saw a boy come to her rescue."He held my hand, gave her a lesson and told her that it was unacceptable behaviour."I've been trying to track him for the last 56 years of my life, to say thank you."A short while later there was a call.
"My producer was taking my calls and she beeped in my ear, 'Wayne's on the line'. And I did a little 'Ooh'," she recalled.A young Wayne Bailey with his grandmother, who he describes as an "upstanding sort of a woman". A friend had brought the call to the attention of Wayne Bailey, who now works in an open-cut coal mine in Muswellbrook, in the Hunter Valley."It was hard to believe actions you do can still affect somebody in 50 years.""So about 50 years ago, Sandra fell over and you picked her up and you held her hand. And you told off the person who had pushed her over. She has always wanted to thank you. You ready?" Sarah Macdonald told Wayne and the thousands of listeners.
"I was mainly sort of reared by my grandmother, who was an upstanding sort of a woman, and she's rubbed off on to me in many ways," Wayne responded.And that act of kindness has now reverberated down to another generation.'I knew today would be special'Last week Sandra and Wayne finally met for the first time in over 50 years, face-to-face in the place that had such an impact on Sandra's life, the schoolyard of Rosehill Public School.
Then, with a discreet high five and a fond farewell, they returned to their own lives, each enriched by that small act of kindness and the belated chance to say thank you.Posted
