There remain 18,800 Australians overseas wanting to fly home but the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says the prospect of their return has become increasingly difficult.

More than 18,000 Australians overseas are still wanting to fly home, but their return is being delayed because of the nation’s cap on international arrivals.

“I think it is fair to say that department and government is very aware of this situation,” she told the committee. SBS News has been contacted by numerous Australians who say despite their attempts, they have been unable to secure flights home because of a lack of availability and high costs.Rifqa Hussein, who lives in Egypt and recently lost her job as a teacher in Cairo, said she has had a number of flights cancelled and is desperate to return home.

Dr Webster said the department had become aware of the issues with airlines making “commercial decisions” to restrict flights but had"little leverage" to influence their actions. She said she has been unable to return to her husband in Brisbane and has faced pressure from airlines to purchase business class tickets to secure a return flight.

NO OPEN BORDERS. After Australia being crippled by the 2nd wave in Victoria thanks to International travellers borders must stay restricted. Anyone wanting to fly to Australia should be COVID19 tested at their point of departure & be negative BEFORE flying. ProtectAustralia

Where does this figure come from?

Lucky them. I'd happy swap positions.

Stranded? They never knew they should home sooner or not leave if that is what they did during coivd? Yes there will be a few genuine cases but not the majority.

Indeed my daughter is one. Luckily she lives in Japan, is married to a Japanese man and is safe. Unfortunately she will miss her brothers wedding as she won’t be able to travel until mid next year.

They have had literally months to come home. Yet I work in a different state and can't afford to quarantine if I went home so I haven't seen my family since February... Yeah I don't feel sorry for them ... I am upset that thousands of Australians just like me get no news cover

Maybe if the airlines like Qantas quit crying poor mouth and kicking non first and business class travellers off, they might not see such a huge decline. And the government? As usual, not their problem. Airlines auspol

StaynerThomas Thank you so much for this article ❤️

But yes they are going to let in OS students. This Gov has got it's priorities all wrong.

But, but some pollies seem to be able to travel? Maybe they're immune to the virus? geez...

farce.

Open the borders! Other countries are slowly opening up. We need to manage it properly, not just lock ourselves up forever. Testing on arrival and 4 days after, with strict self-isolation until 2x negative results. Then we can allow greater travel again.

But they will let all these overseas students in

Thanks to Chinazi in spreading this deadly virus 🦠 and pandemic ChinaLiedPeopleDied

China's anti-dumping probe could add to the woes of Australia's winemakersWinemakers still recovering from bushfires, and battling the impact of coronavirus on sales, are nervous about the impact China's investigation into Australian wine imports will have on the local industry. I am not surprised at China s position..Australia has dared to question their authority and now China is going to do whatever it takes to belittle and humiliate Australia who they expect to grovel and do as they’re told..the only thing that matters to China is China 😫😫😫 'What's happened is [that] the success of imported wine into China has had a very deleterious effect on the local [Chinese] industry,' Mr Harris said. And fair enough, globalisation has run its course. Drop you prices, focus on domestic markets or pack up & move on. Wine costs a ‘motza’, yet no wine bottling company is part of any community Container Deposit Scheme in NSW & ACT. A $3.50 can returns 10c, but $++ wine bottle returns zilch. Why?
