As early as this month, more than 1000 ABC staff could take industrial action as two unions prepare to ask members what to do.

have taken a step towards a national strike, with their unions asking the Fair Work Commission to petition members after negotiations with management stalled.

A strike among union members would, depending on what’s involved, be a severe restriction on ABC’s operations – the broadcaster has 3825 full-time and 738 contracted employees. Combined, it’s understood both unions have well over 1000 members. “The solution to that issue is not to turn around and ask staff to continuously accept sub-inflation pay rises that leaves them and their families struggling to keep up with the cost of living,” she said.

Second, that management carry out a gender and racial pay gap audit. Third, a review of workload, and lastly, changes to the way the ABC pays overtime. The negotiations have been under way since July last year, shortly before the organisation received an $83.7 million operational and $32 millionover four years – $20.9 million and $8 million a year in each area.
