Richie Porte loses more time as crosswinds cause chaos at the front of the peloton, while Caleb Ewan and Michael Matthews both miss out on victory.

Stage victory has eluded both Caleb Ewan and Michael Matthews once again at the Tour de France, as the Australian pair sprinted to third and fourth respectively on a dramatic stage 10.Richie Porte lost 1 minute and 40 seconds to Geraint ThomasOn the last stage before the first rest day of this year's Tour, cross-winds in the final 30 kilometres played havoc with the main bunch, derailing the ambitions of several of the main contenders.

Echelons develop in crosswinds when teams fan out across the road to help shelter from the wind and often cause gaps to form in the peloton. With Team Ineos and Julian Alaphilippe's Deceuninck-Quick-Step team injecting some extra pace at the front, several of the main general classification riders were caught napping, including Richie Porte.

"We knew that it was coming, but when they put it in the gutter there I was the last person not to get across," Porte told SBS after the race.Porte is now 3 minutes and 59 seconds behind race leader Alaphilippe, who has a 1 minute, 12-second advantage over Thomas and 1 minute, 16 seconds over his Columbian teammate Egan Bernal.
