The Victorian Greens vow to use their crossbench influence in a future state parliament to push for more frequent train and tram services across the majority of Melbourne lines, in a bid to move closer to a 'turn up and go' public transport system.

abc.net.au/news/melbourne-train-tram-services-victorian-greens-state-election/101357298The Victorian Greens has announced an ambitious plan to boost the frequency of public transport in Melbourne, enabling commuters to catch a train or tram every 10 minutes or less, on most of the network.

The frequency of trains would double on the Dandenong, Pakenham, Clifton Hill, Mernda, Hurstbridge, Werribee, Craigieburn, Sunbury, Newport and Glen Waverley lines, with commuters only having to wait for a maximum of 10 minutes for a train, between 7am and 7pm. The minor party will not form government after the election but carries power in the crossbench and has pledged to use whatever influence it holds in a future parliament to advance the proposal.

"What we are trying to do is encourage people to make the shift to public transport and away from petrol cars."

A Tram uses 600 volts.

I'm not allowed to pull my caravan by train.

I don’t live there but I think any proposal to improve public transport is a good thing. They tried a similar thing here in Brisbane about 10 years ago and it made the train system useful until the union run QR said it was too hard. Now we’re lucky to get 2 trains an hour.

Excellent idea

100% in favour of this. Bring Melbs up to the same level of PT service as Paris, Madrid, et al. Now, can we please do something about the metro buses? What a mess. Every THIRTY MINUTES during peak hour? And they often arrive EARLY and don’t wait (passive aggressive drivers).

They love their coal powered trains.

Yeah another cloud fairy proposal. Double frequency needs double the rolling stock workers and maintenance. It also needs more connecting services more commuter car parks. But that's not the greens problem. They would do better using transit card data to push for new services

thats a good policy, we think we are a world class city but we fail on public transport and in other areas, if easier for people to get around maybe we would be open longer

And the belgrave/lilydale line just doesn't exist?

Guess what, solar does not provide continuous power down here either

Only if the train and tram are made of renewable steel aluminium and copper..God knows we could not be hypocrites now could we.

How about the rest of the state?

Is there nothing Leftards can do without spending other people's money?

Should make the weekend timetable the same as the weekdays so people can get out on the weekend Sundays are the worst
