Melbourne already has the researchers and the expertise in running drug trials ready to work with the pharma multinational.

For most of her career, Traude Beilharz hid the true nature of her research. Many of her colleagues working in RNA biology did the same.

By early 2021, almost every state wanted to build an industry around it, but Victoria took the lead with a $50 million commitment to create a new entity calledThe state turned disadvantage into advantage.

Professor Colin Pouton says local researchers should resist the temptation to give away too much IP too early. It never had the bandwidth to develop all its ideas before but now, thanks to its vaccine success, it has the revenue to do so. There will probably be new drugs, too. These may take eight years to develop, which is faster than the traditional 15-year lead time for conventional drugs.Much, however, depends on what Moderna does and where. Although it has been making encouraging noises, there’s no detail yet. The principal agreement was made in December and the Victorian and federal governments are now settling the terms with the company.

Monash University is keen for Moderna to travel 45 minutes down the highway to Clayton, home of the Discovery Institute that houses 65 RNA researchers, the largest contingent in the country. Carroll says the institute has an RNA dream team, led by three scientists assembled from Nobel Prize-winning labs across the world. “Having Moderna on site would be a fantastic opportunity to look at new ways of trying to synthesise messenger RNA, purify it, make it more stable and efficient.”

“By having a real connection rather than being frantically hooked into grant cycles, with their short-term security and high anxiety, we would have long-term vision, a filter through which we could make decisions.”This is where Professor Colin Pouton cautions locals, saying they should resist the temptation to give away too much IP too early.

All depends on Moderna’s attitude, which is yet to be disclosed. “There has to be goodwill and if it comes in with the wrong attitude, it won’t be beneficial for Australia. With the right attitude, it could be wonderful for the country,” Pouton says.

Victoria’s purpose-built quarantine facility opens on Monday. This is what it’s like insideThe Victorian Quarantine Hub has an initial capacity of 500 people, however there won’t be many taken to the Mickleham camp in its early days due to the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions COVID19Vic Typical neoliberal state response. Respond far, far too late to the initial crisis and spend lots of money on private contracts. It’s a prison for refugees. It was never going to be a quarantine camp. A prison and a rip-off of public money, diverted to the developer and business mates of politicians. Everyone involved in it, or who supported it, or the media who didn’t question it should be ashamed. Why!
