Modern Guru: When travelling, is it wrong to use free Wi-Fi without making a purchase? | GoodWeekendMag

Q: When travelling overseas, I often enter a McDonald's and use the free Wi-Fi. My husband thinks this is wrong and insists on purchasing food, which he doesn't eat and throws in the bin. Are his wasteful actions more of a concern? F.D., MARENGO, VICTo answer your question properly I'll need to do some basic maths, which may not go so well because I failed basic maths in grade 6, getting an exam score of 32/5nds per cent or something . But let's try this anyway.

Now apparently the monthly cost of an average broadband account is $65. So if we want to work out the hourly Wi-Fi cost, we simply divide $65 by … uhhhhh ... 30 or 31 days in a month , then we simply divide that by ... uhhhhh ... the square-root of 200/500GB of data , and we wind up with an hourly Wi-Fi cost of … uhhhh … not much, a bee's teeny wiener amount. Hardly worth bothering to work out, so I won't.

So if you use McDonald's free Wi-Fi for an hour, we simply subtract the hourly Wi-Fi cost from McDonald's hourly earnings, which gives us a final answer of … uhhhhh … doesn't matter, you win the argument. Buying unwanted food is a waste. And your husband is a twit to the power of 19.09/2nds, cubed.

GoodWeekendMag Is it safe to use WiFi so insecure you can access it without buying something that entitles you to use it?

GoodWeekendMag Well if you're at a cafe, restaurant or bistro, you've got to eat or drink something.
