Republican Mitt Romney has become the only senator in US history to vote to convict and remove from office a president from his own party — breaking an otherwise party-line vote.

In President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, Senator Romney turned his back on the Republicans on the first charge, abuse of power, resulting in a vote of 52-48.

“The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust,” he said. Senator Romney returned to party lines for the second charge, obstruction of Congress, with a vote of 53-47. Image: Getty

Wow you guy's are unreal calling Mitt Romney a backstabber but Joyce and Canavan lovely blokes and all taking center stage when it was supposed to be a day of remembrance for the Brave Firies who lost their lives in the Bushfires.

Trump impeached4life auspol USA - If democracy is about party lines then democracy is now just a formality. This failed impeachment placed party politics above the principle equity & the rule of law -

Mitt Resentment 😉

Quite telling, Trump is the swamp

Someone who did not succumb to a bribe or threat. Good on you sir. You have moral decency. Respect ❤️

Why is it backstabbing to uphold the law?

It's not backstabbing, it's standing up for law and order. More politicians should try that novel approach.

He is now famous for something.

Just scrum Mitt you and the Democrats

Oh Mittens...

There is a judas amongst us, at the strike of 12 midnight he will vote against me. Go, and do what you must do judas.

Now I know where the term...’Trumped up charges’ comes from. Romney both stupid and treacherous.

I’m pretty sure that is supposed to read “Mitt Romney stands up against corruption despite politics.”

Hard to understand how so many men & woman can blatantly disregard their oath of office. A massive bunch of dishonorable, immoral lemmings who should be replaced as members of GOP.

Romney a very sick cowardly rat.

Good. He has done his duty for Democracy.

The Donald is more popular in Mitten's own state than Romney himself. How embarrassing yet again for Mitt.

I bet he is in a tight seat

To be fair he needs to do what he feels is right! The problem is everything in politics is just that...politics! Weird decision. Sour grapes

Perfect stank face from trump

Trump will have his revenge.

won't be long before he is former senator mitt ronmey
