Vincent Edward Down was last seen in 1969. A coroner has now handed down findings into his death.

A Tasmanian coroner has found Mr Down's likely cause of death was from a gunshot, fired by his wife's former lover.A Tasmanian fisherman who was last seen more than 50 years ago was most likely shot dead by his wife's former lover, a coroner has found.

When Mrs Down arrived home in the early hours of August 8, her husband wasn't there, and following a search of the Bridport Wharf and his boat, she reported her husband missing. Vincent Down moved to Bridport, in Tasmania's north-east, after leaving his job with Tasmania Police to become a carpenter.

"I have been thinking about Down and I might have done something to him … I keep thinking I may have washed out the back of the ute that night Down went missing … But I don't know if it really happened," Mr Feuerhammer said. "A matter that I consider to be of significance is that Mrs Down told police that following her ending the relation with Mr Feuerhammer he said something to the effect that he would cause her as much pain as she had caused him," said Mr Cooper.
