The main body of the MRH90 Taipan aircraft which crashed into the ocean off the Whitsundays with four defence personnel on board is still 'yet to be located,' says Defence Minister Richard Marles.

The Defence and Deputy Prime Minister said while debris from the military helicopter was discovered about 12 hours after the crash, the main body of the aircraft is still missing.

Richard Marles says there will be “a full investigation” into why the MRH90 Taipan chopper crashed into the ocean off the Whitsundays on Friday with four defence personnel on board. Picture: Supplied. “As you’ll appreciate right now the focus is on the search and rescue. The accident occurred on Friday night and there is much work still to be done there," Mr Marles said.

About 800 aircraft and vessels from the Australian, US and Canadian Airforce and Navies have been deployed to scour waters near Hamilton Island in the search for the four missing -who are all from the Sydney barracks in Holsworthy.
