Preference flows between minor parties in the Senate may throw up surprising results

This election represents the first true test of the new Senate voting system, introduced by Malcolm Turnbull but impeded in 2016 because of that year's double dissolution election.

Political science professor Patrick Dumont, who is leading ANU's involvement in smartvote Australia, said the results showed voters had "a clear choice" between Labor and Liberal. "It is a strikingly common feature across those [right-wing] parties that candidates take a less environment-friendly position than the two major parties," Professor Dumont said. But he urged caution because the analysis was based on parsing candidates' positions rather than official responses by the parties.

The rise of minor political parties in Australia | Sky News AustraliaFrom One Nation to the Greens, the rise of minor parties has become an integral part of modern Australian politics.\n\nOne in four Australian voters are expected to turn to minor parties in the upcoming election. \n\nWith far smaller teams and budgets, and less experience, the fight is extra tough to bring awareness to these parties with a total of 58 registered options ahead of the upcoming election. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n I think at least that many. I was thinking %35 & 40 would be good. Hope I am right. Not really but will Vote below the line to preference who I want Politicians from the major parties don’t represent their electorate, they represent their own parties. Too much rigid party control. The entire system is obsolete and needs a major overhaul. Auspol AUSVote2019
