Thousands of stranded native fish will be relocated from drought-ravaged Menindee from Monday in a two-week rescue mission targeting pools that will not survive the summer.
Rescued fish will be transferred from nets into vehicles with oxygen and temperature control to provide the best possible chance of survival.The fish will then be taken to a section of the Lower Darling which fishery experts say will offer better quality habitat and long-term water security for the fish.
Mr Marshall said the relocation of fish within the Darling River would help maintain the "genetic and cultural linkages" of fish to the Lower Darling. "We’ll be creating a modern day Noah’s Ark to ensure that regardless of what pans out this summer, our native fish species are protected for future generations.
"We have been asking for months for the fish to be saved because they are dying slowly in puddles of filthy, deoxygenated boggy holes," he said.
