Australia’s gas exporters are edging closer to a deal with the Albanese government that would boost supplies and help temper fears of looming shortages.

Australia’s biggest gas exporters are edging closer to striking a new agreement with the federal government that would boost local supplies of the fossil fuel and help temper fears of winter shortfalls in Victoria and NSW.

A landmark deal struck in 2022 under the “heads of agreement” between the government and the industry led to the exporters committing an extra 157 petajoules of domestic gas – about 25 per cent of annual east coast demand – in response to forecasts of domestic shortfall risks emerging in 2023.

Victorian Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio accused the Queensland gas exporters of “putting their export profits ahead of domestic supply needs”. However, the energy industry and large industrial customers that rely on gas for energy or as a feedstock are increasingly on edge about the threat of shortfalls, and argue developing more production fields closer to the demand centres will be critical to ensuring gas can flow reliably and affordably for those who need it.
