New South Wales man Michael Thomas Rae has pleaded guilty to unlawfully killing Wesley "Wes" Prentice in a daylight shooting in the Newcastle suburb of Cooks Hill .They found Mr Prentice lying in the lounge room of a unit with a gunshot wound to the chest. Michael Thomas Rae , 38, was due to stand trial for murder in the Supreme Court in Newcastle from today.Prosecutor Lee Carr accepted the plea and the murder indictment was discharged.

The prosecution had alleged the shooting stemmed from a drug debt with Mr Prentice killed during an argument.Officers from Newcastle City Police District commenced inquiries before detectives from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad took over the investigation under Strike Force Hibbard. Heavily armed police tracked Rae down 10 days later and arrested him at Bonny Hills, about 20 kilometres south of Port Macquarie.

At the time police said he was carrying a bag that contained cash and a loaded shortened single-barrel 12-gauge shotgun.
