The State Library station being built beneath Swanston Street is starting to take shape, with the first underground station platforms being carved out of the earth.

Public Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said a series of access shafts were being built to avoid ripping up Swanston Street and disturbing the city's busiest tram route.
