Meteorologist reveals ‘most likely’ cause of fatal turbulence on Singapore Airlines Flight 321 that led to plane dropping 6,000ft in just three minutes
It would be like being on some sort of a cross between a rollercoaster, a tower drop ride and a bucking bull. You’ve likely witnessed smoke rising from a candle or a fire and can see the whisps and swirls of the smoke rising in a random and disorganized way. This is where air currents encounter hills and buildings that it has to move around or over – causing eddies and turbulence. It heats the ground and that in turn warms the air above it – causing it to rise. Therefore, within thunderstorms the air can rise and fall very rapidly – that's why pilots rarely fly into storms. It occurs in the mid and upper atmosphere – including the cruising altitude of planes.
Within storms, air is generally rising, but next to storms in clear air it is often sinking – sometimes as far as 30km away from a thunderstorm. Mountains cause waves in the air that can trigger clear air turbulence. Then on the other side of the mountain the air dips down into a larger space again and slows.
