Ahead of the Northern Territory's biggest music festival Bass in the Grass, research shows party-goers want access to pill testing.

A study from Menzies has found strong support from NT festival goers for drug checking, which researchers say suggests a need for on-site checking services.NT Minister for Health Selena Uibo says pill testing will not be introduced in the NT anytime soon.

Pill testing, also known as drug checking, allows people to test their drugs and find out what’s actually in them."We found that three quarters of our participants supported or strongly supported allowing people to check their drugs on site at festivals," lead researcher Cassandra Wright said."It's not enough to tell people to not use drugs," Dr Wright said.

"CanTEST, the service in Canberra city, is finding that around half of the drugs presented contain unexpected substances," she said. "It's quite clearly being used up here and pill testing allows everyone to use drugs safely," she said."People are going to do it, right, they're not going to stop so it's probably better they do it safely," he said.Despite demand on the ground, NT Health Minister Selena Uibo said there was currently no plans to introduce pill testing at this stage.
