Mental health distress spikes for women, the young and parents of preschool-aged kids during pandemic | bevanshields

Researchers said the increase "might represent a so-called spike in emotional response" that stabilises or falls with time as people adjust to lockdowns and social distancing.

Governments and scientists are scrambling to understand the mental health impacts of lockdowns - particularly given more nationwide or local measures will have to be deployed over the coming year before a vaccine or treatment helps the pandemic. They found the overall figure rose from 11.5 last financial year to 12.6 in the weeks after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Britain's nationwide lockdown on March 23.

The increase in mental distress did not affect all groups equally, with some subgroups showing little or no additional mental health issues while others showed marked increases. The authors were surprised to find no significant increase in mental distress based on pre-existing characteristics like being in an ethnic minority, living without a partner, living in an urban area or having a pre-existing health condition that put them at greater risk of contracting COVID-19.
