Parts of Melbourne have been smashed by damaging wind gusts that have brought down trees and powerlines overnight. A vigorous cold front is continuing to move across the state on Tuesday and has brought with it strong winds averaging 60 to 70km/h with gusts up to 90km/h expected. Suburbs in Melbourne, including the southeast, the outer northern and western suburbs, as well as the Mornington Peninsula, Otways and the Macedon Rangers copped the worst of the weather.
The damaging wind and thunderstorm activity is expected to continue early on Tuesday and ease for most of the state by late morning. The State Emergency Service advises drivers to pull over away from trees, drains and floodwaters, and avoid travel if the conditions are dangerous. Residents should also secure loose items such as umbrellas and trampolines and move vehicles away from trees.
