The outpouring of sorrow is all too familiar in a city that’s becoming used to holding vigils for women who are killed at the hands of men.
Seven months later, Aiia Maasarwe was stalked from a tram in Bundoora and killed by a man not far from her university accommodation. Her body was discovered by workers near a busy shopping centre. A vigil will be held for the 25-year-old at 5pm on Friday night at Royal Park where Ms Herron’s body was found.The women’s deaths all share a common theme that was driven home by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and current and former police officers. That theme is the behaviour of men.“This is not about the way women behave, this is not about where women are at what hour.”Henry Hammond has been charged with Ms Herron’s murder.
Former Victorian homicide detective Charlie Bezzina said: “Everyone’s got the right to go about their normal business. I don’t care who they are, they can go about their business. I’m not singling out women at all. The fact is, anyone can go anywhere, and they’re entitled to be there. They need not be told: ‘Don’t go there, don’t go there’.”
Rates of murder for both males and females have stayed steady over the past 6 years, at around 1.2 deaths per 100,000 males and 0.7 deaths per 100,000 females. More males than females are murdered overall, and males are more likely to have experienced a murder attempt.
