With a trio of legends absent with injuries, three teenagers, including Leylah Fernandez, have stepped into the spotlight and are flourishing at Flushing Meadows.

Fears the US Open might lack some fizz without injured superstars Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have been unfounded.

Eighteen-year-old Raducanu was the darling of this year's Wimbledon during her run to the fourth round. After making it through the US Open qualifying, Raducanu is yet to lose a set and she has thrashed Ash Barty's conqueror Shelby Rogers six-two, six-one. It was her first appearance at Arthur Ashe stadium."The mentality, the demeanour, the composure, everything — she's the real deal," ESPN commentator and former world number four, Mary Joe Fernandez, said.

"In Spain they are talking about me a lot and I'm trying not to think about this. [And I instead] just focus on New York, on every day here," Alcaraz said.Fernandez, whose father/coach is from Ecuador and mother is Filipino-Canadian, isn't concerned by the media spotlight. In her US Open debut, Raducanu has enjoyed nightly visits to Times Square for frozen yoghurt and she listens to jazz to wind down. She's so youthful that she regards English-Irish band One Direction as a heritage act."When I was younger for sure [I was a fan] … not so much in the recent years," Raducanu said.

Fernandez, the 2019 French Open juniors champion, has captivated New York crowds with her beaming smile."Having fun on the court is the key to anybody's success, especially mine", Fernandez said. Brad Gilbert coached Andre Agassi to six major titles and said Alcaraz had similar fighting qualities.

Underlying health conditions? That’s almost all of usWe are being indoctrinated into believing that the increasing COVID-19 death toll is confined to the infirm. It’s a cynical fiction, and a dangerous one. Agreed. You can’t justify that people should accept the vaccine and then isolate the few with underlying health issues. Note: Air pollution and water contamination can affect everyone. GladysB Yes, a point I have been making for almost 2 years now. So all the school sports days, all the healthy cooking episodes, amount to naught. Next will come a FAT TAX.
